Linkfest: Gay Rights Updates
A real logjam in the aggregator this week, so the Linkfest will come in three topical posts.
---
ITEM: Arkansas governor Mike Beebe has announced that he will oppose a tired, recycled voter initiative calling for a ban on gay adoption and foster parenting. He cannot actually veto the measure; he only indicated that he would vote against it at the polls as a citizen. Furthermore, he only opposes on principle the ban on gay adoption; he embraces a ban on gay foster parenting but is concerned that it would again be ruled unconstitutional. With friends like these... (Incidentally, it's fascinating that the Human Rights Campaign, on top of mischaracterizing Beebe's announcement as a veto threat, is praising Beebe. Does the acronym "RTFA" mean anything to these professional gay activists?) Previous post here.
---
ITEM: Meanwhile, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has followed through on his threat to veto a gay marriage bill duly enacted by the state legislature. The Republican's reasoning: A flawed interpretation of a previously passed voter initiative, and his belief that such issues should be left to activist judges. Did I mention that he's a Republican? Previous post here.
---
ITEM: Anthony Fortunato, the self-declared (truthfully or otherwise) gay killer of another gay, was convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime. The jurors correctly followed the law -- which despite the sloppy term "hate crime" does not require hate as an element. Previous post here.
---
ITEM: A scientist has predicted that people will be legally allowed to marry robots by 2050. The piece includes the obligatory (or at least oblivious) cheap shot that such marriages would probably first occur in Massachusetts -- because it "is more liberal than most other jurisdictions in the United States and has been at the forefront of same-sex marriage." Great "defending traditional marriage" fodder for the bigots -- expect lamentations to commence swiftly. (Gigolo Joe unavailable for comment.)
---
ITEM: A late entry via Pam's House Blend. A bigot in Maine (apparently speaking only for himself and not any organized group) is contemplating a sweeping "no nothing never" state constitutional amendment permanently and prophylactically eradicating all legal protections for gays. Here's the comment I left:
---
ITEM: The U.K. is on the verge of censoring anti-gay rap lyrics. Given that the U.K. specifically and Europe generally have no First Amendment, this latest unconscionable suppression of thought is not exactly shocking -- cf., this (non-gay) news item.
---
ITEM: The ENDA-T conundrum rages on. A sample of intelligent commentary I've seen includes Citizen Crain (pro-"ENDA-T") and Marti Abernathey (anti-"ENDA-T"); here's someone who thoughtfully and eloquently remains ambivalent. Most recent post here.

If I were an anti-gay bigot, the last thing I'd want is to enact another "Amendment 2" that would serve as a reminder that Romer v. Evans is still good law and might stir up all those "activist judges" again.Previous post here.
Indeed, judges -- who seem obsessed more with Lawrence and Loving than with the (arguably more powerful) ruling in Romer -- could certainly use a refresher course in summarily disallowing animus as a basis for discrimination.
