A Stitch in Haste

A Stitch in Time Saves Nine...But Haste Makes Waste

"Don't Run! We Are Your Friends!" Quote of the Day
"The caricatures of the left notwithstanding, there is no substantial conservative constituency which is hostile to homosexual indidividuals."

Hostile to proofreaders ("indidividuals"?) is another matter altogether (and it's "that," not "which").

Before I reveal the source of this eyebrow-raising quote, let's briefly document its patent absurdity: most self-identifying social conservatives are opposed not only to marriage equality for gays, but also to every single aspect of equal treatment for gays. Every single one.

Partnership alternatives such as civil unions. Employment benefits. Protection against discrimination. Access to immigration opportunities. Don't Ask Don't Tell. Hospital visitation. Adoption. Unbiased and unredacted school curricula. And on and on...

They fight us, rabidly, on every front. Who could pretend otherwise, even among conservatives?

Oh, and incidentally: They beat us. They batter us. They murder us.

But "hostile"? Perish the thought.

---

Now here is the source of the quote: An article by a radical social conservative rationalizing his support for — get this — Rudy Giuliani.

Thrice-married, pro-choice, resided-with-gays, cross-dressing, ran-as-the-Liberal-Party-candidate, Bluest-of-Blue-State-politician Rudy Giuliani. The great hope for social conservatives in 2008.

Who needs TownHall when you have this jackass?

---

This bizarre article is just the latest data point confirming a thesis which I am increasingly embracing: That the radical social conservatives realize that they are not going to be kingmakers in 2008 and are instead trying, at all costs, to contort themselves into a position where they can support whoever the Republican nominee ends up being.
Giuliani? One of us! Always was...

McCain? One of us! Always was...

Romney? One of us! Always was...

Brownback? Never heard of him...

Huckabee? Never heard of him...
Those who might actually win? One of us! Always was... Those who truly are one of them, but who have no chance of winning? Never heard of him...

It will be interesting if not hilarious to see such intellectual gymnastics multiply as the campaign progresses. We are in for a recurring lesson in the Fundamental Theorem of Politics: Principles are never more important than winning.

"Don't run! We are your friends!" Name the movie. No Googling! Need a hint?
I want the people to know that they still have two out of three branches of the government working for them — and that ain't bad!

"We Will Never, Ever Betray You..."
Wow, just wow:
For my fellow Americans who are gay — I just advise you how Bill Clinton treated your cause in 1993 after you went flat out for him in 1992. You will be betrayed again, if you are fool enough to back Democrats in 2008. True, we conservative Christians might not seem the logical home for you, but you do know where we stand, we are ready to compromise and we will never, ever betray you.
Let's get one thing clear: Non-partisan non-Democratic gays like me are entitled, indeed obligated, to remind gay Democrats just what Democratic politicians have and have not done for gays in the past.

But that is not the domain of conservative Christians, who have waged jihad against gays for the past several years, pandering to the most ignorant, most vicious, most un-Christian elements of their base.

You compare yourself to Democratic politicians? You equate their "do little that is good" with your "do much that is evil"?

How dare you.

Almost all conservative Christians obsess over hurting us politically. Many obsess over hurting us economically. A few hurt us physically. Some are willing to sacrifice children for the sake of hurting us. A handful would gladly send us to the gas chambers.

But you will never, ever, betray us? (Your italics, not mine.)

Save that insane blather for the Log Cabin Republicans. Leave the gay Democrats to me. I've earned the right to critique them. You've earned nothing but the right to see your grandchildren apologize for your sins.
