Linkfest -- Special "Gays Be Everywhere" Edition

Here, there, and everywhere.
ITEM: The Cato Institute ran a summary of how gays fare in much of the Islamic world. It isn't pretty. Tales of violent government-sanctioned persecution are ubiquitous throughout the Middle East and Islamic Africa. Read it.
---
ITEM: Meanwhile, Canada has essentially finalized allowing gay marriage throughout the country (eight provinces and one territory had already sanctioned same-sex marriage). Canada now joins Belgium and the Netherlands in offering same-sex unions.
Which countries should the U.S. be emulating again? Who are our allies and trading partners, and who are our enemies and the recipients of our foreign aid?
---
ITEM: Meanwhile, bigots in Maine appear to have gathered enough signatures to put a gay rights bill passed by that state's "activist" legislature and signed by its "activist" governor to the voters. This is a simple non-discrimination bill that has nothing to do with gay marriage. Maine is the only state in New England that has no state-wide law banning discrimination against gays. Which doesn't stop the lobsterheads from opposing it and expressing their outrage over the actions of their elected officials. Go figure.
---
ITEM: Keep an eye on the United Church of Christ, which is voting on whether to openly support same-sex unions. The head of the church has endorsed the proposal. You may recall that this is the same Church that had its television ads — which conveyed a message of tolerance and welcoming to gays and other minorities — banned from several networks. Bravo to them!
