A Stitch in Haste

A Stitch in Time Saves Nine...But Haste Makes Waste

A collection of real-world libertarian, individualist and laissez-faire rants on law, economics, politics, culture and other current events

Republican Roadkill
(Why aren't you reading this at the new website?)

---

Just a quick pass-along that the tax-and-spend Republicans are at it again:

The Senate on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a six-year, $295 billion [highway funding] bill, prompting the White House to repeat a warning that that was too much money and would warrant a presidential veto.

The House in March approved a $284 billion package, the maximum level the administration deemed acceptable. In addition, the House bill is fundamentally different, setting aside $12 billion for some 4,000 specific projects that lawmakers contend are vital to their districts and critics label as "pork."
Remind me again why there's a libertarian wing of this party?

More:
Lawmakers also said that every $1 billion spent on highway construction creates 47,000 jobs.
Um, no. Broken Window Fallacy. At best, those 47,000 jobs are merely redistributed according to the whims of the politicians. At worst, far more jobs than that are lost through the drain of taxes and budget deficits.
