Damn Right They're Bigots
(Why aren't you reading this at the new website?)

---
Steve Miller over at IGF has yet another thought-provoking post in response to a review of the new book "Why Marriage Matters" by the issue's advocate-in-chief, Evan Wolfson.

Miller concludes with the following:
Time and again, gay activists dismiss anyone opposed to the profound socio-cultural changes the movement for gay legal equality represents as a "bigot" or "hater." Well, some may be, but most are work-a-day folks who fear the breakdown of the norms they believe knit society together.

First, I question his thesis. I would argue that the "work-a-day" folk are the people who couldn't care less about the issue, like the 72% of Louisiana voters who stayed home during that state's recent gay marriage vote. Practically every poll that attempts to quantify concern about gay marriage show not opposition so much as apathy. Keep that in mind when you see headlines like this.

Second, speaking as one of those who does summarily dismiss opponents of gay marriage as "bigots," as far as I'm concerned the burden is on the opponents of gay marriage to demonstrate that they are not bigots. I am not exaggerating when I say that I have still not heard a single viable argument against gay marriage other than naked bigotry. I do hear plenty of unviable arguments that have been so thoroughly discredited as to no longer merit replies (e.g., "we can't afford it," "4,000 years of history," "whatever happened to majority rule?" and my personal favorite, "it's all about the children").

When I'm the victim of discrimination or bigotry, I'm gonna call 'em as I see 'em. The sensibilities of any "work-a-day" folk who would rather not hear the word "bigot," whether directed at them or someone else, be damned. I refuse to go quietly into that good debate.

POST SCRIPT: Did you know that gay marriage is a "virus"? Well of course, what else would expect from us selfish hedonists?
